about

Few pass on the welcome chance to compare the spectral vocal harmonies of Amy van Keeken (vocals/guitar) and Colleen Brown (vocals/bass) to that of rock legends Heart - an obvious and accurate portrayal. But to say The Secretaries are at all a 70s throwback would be off by a mile: drummer Natasha Fryzuk’s (vocals/percussion) performance has nothing to do with the polished sound of that era, and everything to do with punk rock and riot grrrl; van Keeken’s guitar is as raw, sludgy, and distorted as it gets; Brown’s bass-playing is pure pop joy until it is downright, crowd-moving disco.
Standing sidelong and strong to the trio is the indispensible horn duo, The Brassholes – comprised of Darren Radbourne and Greg Hutchinson, and synthesizer wizard Miss Mannered (of Edmonton’s Concealer). Together, The Secretaries are at once dreamy, anthemic, and dark.

The Secretaries Edmonton, Alberta

The Secretaries combine dreamy, anthemic vocal harmonies with dark, indie sensibilities. Disco and discord find a seamless, spectral partnership in the heart of this trio – a sound brightened by intermittent horns and atmospheric synth. Maybe you’ll cry, but probably you’ll dance. ... more
